Why Gozo?
The coast often drops steeply, with rock walls, caves and canyons, and many dive sites can be reached from shore. Swell is low at sheltered spots and visibility is often good. There is also dense infrastructure: dive centres in Marsalforn, Xlendi, Mġarr and other places that offer courses, equipment and guided dives.
Dwejra: Blue Hole and Azure Window
The best-known site is Dwejra on the west coast. The Blue Hole is a vertical shaft in the rock connected to the open sea through an arch. According to travel sites the arch starts at about 6 metres depth and reaches around 15 metres; the entry is sheltered and doable for beginners. Visit Gozo writes that Jacques Cousteau counted the Blue Hole among his ten best dive sites in the world. The spot of the Azure Window, which collapsed in 2017, has itself become a dive site since. Crocodile Rock is also a popular target.
Access to the Blue Hole involves, according to reports, a short walk of 5 to 10 minutes with equipment, over steps and slippery rock. Expect heat and wear sturdy shoes. In heavy seas there is no diving.

Other sites
Xlendi is considered a beginner site with a tunnel cave of around 70 metres and a reef full of marine life, see Xlendi. Marsalforn and the north coast offer clear water, and Mġarr ix-Xini in the south is sheltered and popular with snorkellers. Experienced divers reach wrecks and caves with a guide. Ask the centre for a site that fits weather and level.

Who is it for?
There are sites for beginners and for experienced divers. With a try dive or beginner programme you get into the water under guidance without a licence. If you hold an open-water certificate you can book guided dives. Advanced divers find caves and deeper walls. Many centres rent equipment and offer courses in several languages.
When to dive
Diving works almost all year. The water is warmest in summer, cooler in winter and the suits get thicker. Travel sites name May to October as the most pleasant conditions because weather and sea state often fit. In spring and autumn you often find calm conditions with fewer crowds. More on the page best time to visit.
Snorkelling without a licence
The water is worth it even without a dive licence. Good snorkelling spots are sheltered bays such as Mġarr ix-Xini, Xlendi and parts of the coast near Dwejra when the sea is calm. Watch weather, current and waves, never go alone, use a buoy and ask for advice on site. More on bays in our overview of Gozo beaches.
Safety and booking
Choose centres with recognised training and ask about group size, equipment and emergency plan. Check your fitness to dive and your insurance for diving. For courses and guided dives you can compare offers in advance. Book early in high season, because places in beginner courses are limited.
