What Comino is
Comino is a small, rocky and largely undeveloped island between Malta and Gozo. It is a Natura 2000 protected site and known above all for the Blue Lagoon, a shallow bay with turquoise water over a light bottom. There are also smaller bays such as the Crystal Lagoon, sea caves along the coast and walking paths across the island. There is practically no car traffic. If you want to see the island, plan a day and bring everything you need.
Getting there from Gozo: shuttle or boat tour
From Mġarr harbour on Gozo boats run daily to the Blue Lagoon in season. The crossing takes about 15 minutes according to operators. According to the overview on bluelagoon.mt the return trip from Gozo costs 13 euros for adults and 5 euros for children with Ebsons, and 9 euros for adults and children with Bella Comino Ferries. Boats run from about 8:30 or 9:30 until 18:00 or 19:00. Prices and times change by season, so check them with the operator.
A boat tour costs more but usually offers more: a ride along the coast, caves, several swim stops and a skipper who knows the spots. If you only book one excursion it often serves you better. See our boat tours page for an overview. Kayak trips to Comino exist too, but they are more strenuous and weather-dependent.
| Operator | From | Adult return | Child | Times |

The access pass for the Blue Lagoon
Since 1 May 2025, according to several travel sites and operators, visitors who go ashore at the Blue Lagoon must show a free timed pass. It is booked online through an official access system, you receive a QR code and exchange it at the jetty for a wristband. There are several time slots per day; with tour packages the operators often book it already. bluelagoon.mt writes that access tickets are usually included when you book the ferry. If you stay aboard a boat at anchor and swim from there, you reportedly need no pass. Fines can follow for breaches.
The rules are new and can change. Clarify before booking whether the pass is part of the ticket, and look at the operator's current notices.
When is it quietest?
The Blue Lagoon is a magnet for day-trippers. At midday in July and August it is packed, loungers and parasols are limited, and the rocky shore has hardly any shade. It is calmest on the first ferry in the morning, late in the afternoon and outside high season. In spring and autumn the water is often already or still swimmable while it is less busy. More on the best time to visit.
What to bring
There is hardly any shade, and food is limited and expensive. Bring plenty of water, a hat, something to eat and a towel. Water shoes help on the rocky stretches, and snorkel gear pays off because the water is clear. Loungers and parasols can be rented on site, prices vary. Take your rubbish back; the island is protected.
- Water, at least 1.5 litres per person
- Hat, sunglasses
- Towel and water shoes
- Snorkel and mask
- Snacks and a bag for rubbish
- Printed or saved pass or QR code
More than the lagoon
If you have another hour, walk across the island: there are simple paths to bays and an old watchtower. Boat tours additionally reach sea caves along the coast that cannot be reached from land. Allow enough buffer for the last return, because boats leave the island at fixed times.
With children
The shallow water is pleasant for children, but the sun is strong. Plan shade breaks and check for life jackets on the boat. More on the page Gozo with kids.
