How to get there
There are two ways. The car ferry from Gozo Channel runs from Ċirkewwa in north-west Malta to Mġarr and is the only connection that also takes vehicles. According to Gozo Channel the crossing takes about 25 minutes, operating daily. There is also the fast ferry from Valletta (Lascaris Wharf), which carries foot passengers only and takes about 45 minutes. According to travel sites there has also been a connection from Sliema via Buġibba since May 2026; please check routes and times with the operator.

What the ferry costs and when you pay

At night between November and March, departures from Mġarr after 8 pm have a slightly cheaper fare of 4.05 euros. Foot passengers from Malta buy their ticket before travelling, and according to Gozo Channel it is only validated at the Gozo terminal on the return journey. Vehicle tickets are sold online or at the vehicle booths in Mġarr. The fast ferry costs 7.50 euros one way for adults according to travel sites, with reductions for children and students. Both can be sorted in advance. That saves time on the day.

A plan for one day
Morning: after arriving in Mġarr you go to Victoria and the Citadel. Allow 90 minutes for the walls and the view. Midday: lunch in Victoria. Afternoon: to Dwejra for the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock. Late afternoon: sunset on the cliffs, then back to the harbour. If you prefer a beach, swap Dwejra for Ramla Bay and start with the Ġgantija temples. Allow 15 to 30 minutes of buffer for the ferry at the harbour.
Car, bus or tour?
With a rental car you are freest, but parking costs nerves and you need to check beforehand whether the car may go on the ferry. By bus you reach the main places but are tied to timetables (more at Gozo without a car). According to travel sites the hop-on-hop-off bus stops at Victoria, Dwejra, Ramla Bay and Xlendi among others and is convenient for a day without a car. Guided day tours from Malta take planning and driving off your hands and fit more into a day, but you do not set the pace.
What to cut
Do not try to do the Citadel, temples, Dwejra, Ramla Bay and Comino in one day. Pick two or three that fit together. If you want to see more, stay a night or two: the 3-day plan shows how. Whether Gozo is worth it as a base is covered in Gozo or Malta.
Practical tips
Start early, ferries are emptiest in the morning. Bring water and sturdy shoes. Check the weather, because in strong wind ferry service can be limited. Plan the return in good time so you do not miss the last ferry, and note the departure times on arrival.
- Water and a hat
- Sturdy shoes
- Power bank and downloaded offline map
- Swimwear if you plan a beach
- Cash for kiosks and small entries
- Note the time of the last ferry back
