The short version
Gozo is the smaller, greener, quieter island. Malta is larger, more densely built and offers more city life, nightlife and big hotels. If you want quiet, nature, diving and small villages, Gozo suits you better. If you want cities, nightlife and many restaurants, stay on Malta. Travel sites also describe Gozo as the most frequent choice for couples, especially with farmhouse accommodation, and as a good base for the second half of a longer stay.

Size and distances
Gozo measures only about 14 by 7 kilometres. Distances are short, but roads are narrow and many highlights are spread out. Malta is much larger, and getting between Sliema, Valletta, Mdina and the north takes time. On Gozo you reach the water faster, on Malta the city.

Getting there and the airport
Malta has the airport, Gozo does not. To reach Gozo you fly to Malta first and take the ferry. According to Gozo Channel the car ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr takes about 25 minutes, the fast ferry from Valletta around 45. From the airport to your accommodation on Gozo expect noticeably more time than to a hotel on Malta; one travel blog speaks of up to three hours including waiting. More on the page getting there.
Beaches and water
Both islands have more rock than sand coast. Malta has a few larger sand beaches in the north; Gozo mainly has Ramla Bay and small coves. Gozo is especially popular for diving and snorkelling. More in our overview of Gozo beaches and at diving on Gozo.
Nightlife, food and culture
Malta offers more bars, clubs and restaurants, especially around Sliema, St Julian's and Valletta. Add the capital Valletta, the Three Cities and Mdina as cultural destinations. Evenings on Gozo are calmer: dinner by the harbour, a stroll, early to bed. In return there are the Citadel, the Ġgantija temples and village festas. More on the cuisine at eating on Gozo.
Costs and accommodation
Accommodation and services are usually cheaper on Gozo according to travel sites, and there are more budget options. Add farmhouses with a pool. Malta has more hotels and more choice in city locations. Prices depend strongly on season and location; compare for your dates on the page where to stay.
Buses and getting around without a car
On Malta logistics without a car are easier because more buses run and places lie closer together. On Gozo the bus service is less frequent, and remote corners are awkward without a car. With some planning it still works, see Gozo without a car.
Our advice
Planning a week and want quiet: stay on Gozo. First time on the islands and want to see everything: split the week; three to four nights on Gozo cover the highlights. Only want to party: Malta. For ten days or more Gozo works well as the second half after a few nights in Valletta or Sliema. For a single day read Gozo day trip.
